Celebrating Candlemas: Cheers to Light and Hope!

On this day, February 2nd, we celebrate Candlemas, also known as the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus Christ and the Purification of the Virgin Mary, exactly 40 days after His birth. The festival comes with many names because of its rich biblical origins and cultural traditions, but today we will highlight Candlemas as the “Celebration of Light and Hope.”

Surely, the pure white snow the winter brings may put us in great awe of nature’s beauty, however almost always and inevitably at some point, don’t we find ourselves looking forward to the first signs of spring -- longing for that soothing warmth and abundant daylight? And how perfect is it that Candlemas falls on February 2nd, the day which marks the midpoint between winter solstice and spring equinox? It’s a perfect little reminder that soon, there will be plenty of light and hope, indeed.

Candlemas symbolizes both spiritual and physical purification through the candles’ light. It is also the last Feast of the Church following the Christmas season. Ideally, it is the end of the Christmas ritual, and so if you have not put your holiday decorations away, this might just be perfect time to do so.

There are actually many Candlemas traditions — some sing songs to wish for a good weather, some make exciting games and activities out of it for good fortune, while others make offerings for well-wishes. A common Christian practice is to bring candles to church so these can be blessed before they get lit and be used for the year. Did you notice the main theme? – We follow the light moving forwards to the future full of hope. That’s even especially more beautiful given the state we are in today.
